In order to address life after trauma, we need to address the systems that perpetuate the prevalence of trauma. In today’s episode we welcome our first guest, Dr. Cindy Ivanhoe. Cindy is an acknowledged expert in the field of brain injury rehabilitation. A professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, she has directed programs in the field of neuro-health, giving global lectures, while continuing her research and academic programs in neuropharmacology and spasticity.

As we excavate the complications of the healthcare system and the myriad of organizations that doctors must navigate in an effort to care for their patients, Cindy emphasizes the fragmented infrastructure of healthcare and the need for top-down revision of the medical industry. We discuss the importance of empathy and fostering relationships with patients, while unpacking the history and evolution of medicine and the role of doctor’s in today’s society.

In the first half of this two part episode, we discuss how reality is a perceptual and relative experience, life is not objective and our brains have evolved in an effort to survive this world. Our perspective of life is based on a myriad of factors, including our experiences, as well as the state of our brain health, along with when and where we were born and how we grew up. We consider how trauma and violence came to be so pervasive in our societies, exploring patterns of generational trauma and how it impacts the development of our brains, ultimately how we are able to overcome trauma through the understanding of neuro-plasticity of the brain.
